Keynote speakers
Jo Van Biesebroeck
Jo Van Biesebroeck is a professor of economics at KU Leuven. He has published extensively on international trade, industrial organisation and development economics. His more recent work has focussed on global value chains, the comparative advantage of manufacturing firms, productivity and competition. He also regularly consults to a broad range of policy stakeholders, having done work for the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, amongst others.
Dominik Hartmann
Dominik Hartmann is an adjunct professor in the Department of Economics and International Relations at the Federal University of Santa Catarina. His research explores the relationships between economic complexity, structural change, and inequality. He has pioneered industrial policy decision support approaches and has made significant scholarly contributions towards the understanding of the issues that hinder smart and inclusive diversification processes in developing countries.
Penny Mealy
Penny Mealy is an Economist at the World Bank, a Research Associate at INET and the Oxford Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, and an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at SoDa Labs at the Monash Business School. Her work applies various methods from complex systems and data science to analyse the interrelated challenges of climate change and economic development. Her research has developed novel, data-driven approaches for analysing structural change, occupational mobility and the future of work, and the transition to the green economy.
Adnan Seric
Adnan Seric is a research and industrial policy officer at the Department of Policy, Research and Statistics (PRS) of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). He leads the team responsible for UNIDO Industrial Analytics Platform (iap.unido.org) and is responsible for department’s research in the area of international trade and investment. Prior to UNIDO, he worked as an economist at the OECD and a research fellow at the University of St Andrews (UK).
Workshops
Industrial analytics platform (IAP) workshop
This workshop will explore the use of UNIDO’s Industrial Analytics Platform (iap.unido.org). A team from UNIDO and the University of Cambridge will present the workshop, which will consist of tutorials on using the platform to support global value chain analyses. The workshop will also focus on how the platform can support research seeking to inform industrial policy decision-making, with practical examples of such use cases being presented.
Input-output product space (IO-PS) workshop
This workshop will introduce the details of performing input-output product space (IO-PS) analyses and how such studies can support industrial policy decision-making. The workshop will present detailed examples of the approach’s application to particular value chains, focusing on which insights can be derived from such analyses and the potential pitfalls of IO-PS analyses. The goal is to enable participants to perform IO-PS analyses themselves and provide them with a clear view of how to interpret the results of such investigations.
Participation
The policy workshop is open to policy analysts and researchers from government institutions, universities and related organisations. Participation in the workshop is free of charge. Limited travel support is available to South African participants (subject to selection procedure and funding availability). The workshop will be hybrid, so participants who will not be able to travel can join virtually. Sessions will be translated to French in real-time.

Organizing committee
Karolien De Bruyne
Karolien De Bruyne is Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Business at KU Leuven and Associate Professor Extraordinary at the Department of Industrial Engineering at Stellenbosch University. She is also a senior Member of the Pan-African Scientific Research Council. Her research focuses on location decisions of firms, industrial policy with a focus on global value chains, international trade and labour economics.
Wouter Bam
Wouter Bam is a senior lecturer at the Department of Industrial Engineering at Stellenbosch University. His research focuses, inter alia, on industrial policy questions relevant to developing countries. This includes developing decision-support tools that support governments in attaining their development objectives. He is also a project associate to UNIDO where he contributes to the development of the Industrial Analytics Platform (IAP).
Stephen Bosman
Stephen Bosman is with the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). His research focuses on the industrialisation of nascent industries especially those that are technology intensive. This also touches technologies associated with Industry 4.0 and its implication for organisational competitiveness. He has given input to policy decision-making as a consultant to various government and industry structures on the structure of industries and competitiveness.
